Happy National Mutt Day!

We’re celebrating National Mutt Day today (and all year long)!

A mutt is another name for a mixed-breed dog, or a dog that does not belong to one officially recognized breed and has no known purebred ancestors. It’s estimated by the ASPCA that nearly half of all domesticated dogs are mutts, and about 3/4 of shelter dogs are mixed-breed. That means that the majority of dog owners in Rhode Island have a mutt!

There are a few advantages of adopting a mutt, too:

  • Mutts have more diverse genes. This lowers their chances of developing ailments more common in purebred dogs.

  • Adopting a mutt is more affordable. Shelter fees are considerably less than buying a purebred dog, and rescue animals receive veterinary care before adoption.

  • Mutts are adaptable. Without a specific behavior being bred into their DNA, mixed breed dogs generally can adapt to a variety of environments and jobs.

  • They’re great service dogs. By inheriting best qualities of multiple breeds, they can bring unique talents and skills to service.

  • You’ll save a life! Sadly many people continue to overlook mutts and they can linger longest in shelters. Taking one home will bring joy to you and give your new mixed breed dog a bright future!

Shelters across Rhode Island are at capacity right now. You’ll find a variety of dogs of different ages, size, color and temperament waiting to be discovered. Be sure to inquire at a shelter or foster-based organization today about the furry fellas ready to meet you!
